Packing and restrictions
How to pack a parcel for international shipping
An international parcel is handled many times, often by machines, and may be opened at customs. Pack it to survive a drop and to be easy to inspect and reseal.
Choose the right box
Use a new or near-new double-wall carton. Old boxes lose strength. Leave about 5 cm around fragile items for cushioning, but no more, because extra size increases the price.
Cushion and separate
- Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap
- Fill gaps so nothing moves when you shake the box
- Put heavy items at the bottom
- Keep food and liquids in sealed bags, away from clothes
Seal properly
Use strong packing tape in an H pattern across every seam, top and bottom. Do not use string, sellotape or a cloth wrap; carriers refuse cloth-wrapped parcels.
Label and list
- Put the receiver's address and phone number inside the box too, in case the outer label is damaged
- Remove or cover old labels and barcodes
- Keep a written list of contents and values for the customs declaration
Let us check it
Bring the parcel open to a branch if you are unsure. We will check the packing and the contents against the destination's rules before sealing.
